I asked 87 SEO experts what their favorite link building secrets are. The results are shocking. You won’t believe some of the answers I received.
These are actionable SEO link building tactics you can utilize today to skyrocket your Google rankings for any keyword you want! I won’t waste any more of your time. Lets jump right in…
Rand Fishkin – Moz
“Links are definitely an important factor when it comes to getting traffic and ranking in Google searches for your targeted keywords. Don’t put all your eggs in the backlink basket, though, because there are many other factors to the algorithm like co-occurrence and co-citation. When your co-citations multiply and mix with the white board Friday into the social signal Moz Moz Moz, it can really create a white hat link Thanksgiving.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: I was driving through a tunnel while on the phone with Mr. Fishkin, so his words may have been a little jumbled for my interpretation. I did my best to translate his words for this round-up.
Ronald McDonald – McDonald’s
“When it comes to SEO and link building, the best thing you can do is listen to your audience. Listen to your fans on social media. Give your supporters what they want!
If they want breakfast options at your restaurant all day, give them breakfast! Don’t continue to piss people off day after day at 10:31am, pissing off those that still want to order breakfast. Not everyone is ready for lunch and burgers at that time of the day.
Our campaign to serve breakfast all day has lead to an 804% increase in natural links to mcdonalds.com. Eat that, Google!”
Colonel Sanders – KFC
“People love eating our tasty chicken. And our original KFC recipe is top secret. It’s a highly kept secret of 11 herbs and spices, although, if you order some of our chicken you can clearly see there is pepper on the chicken. So, our recipe is actually one very obvious spice (pepper) and 10 secret spices.
My link building secrets? What the hell does that mean? The internet? What the hell is that? People have posted and outed our secret herb & spice recipe on the internet? F*CK!”
Barney – Barney & Friends
“I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family.
With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won’t you say you love me, too. I love you, you love me, we’re best friends like…”
EDITOR’S NOTE: This “I love you” crap is all the guy would tell me, so I gave up and hung up on him before he could reveal his best expert link building tactics.
Kanye West – Kanye West
“In this day & age, getting natural links to your website is critical when launching a link building campaign. But to reach the crazy Kanye success level, you will need to take a risk and be somewhat controversial. Just think about how often you’ve heard about my Tweets in the media.
Here’s my secret link building idea: You can attend an awards show and run up on stage while another attendee is accepting an award. This will get social media people buzzing about your actions, which can lead to natural links to an article published about the incident. Super white-hat link building advice right there.
You just need to be the first article indexed in Google about the incident so you can collect the links! I could go on with more link building advice, but I’m Kanye West. So I don’t have to and don’t owe you sh*t.”
“Man, remember 2008? What an awesome year. Best year of my life.
And who would’ve predicted I would finally get my chance to start in the NFL, only to accidentally start what people called “Tebowing” after a key win?
My link building advice? Go to college and become a star quarterback. Dominate. Generate media buzz. Get drafted in the NFL. Fail hard after a couple years. But ride the media buzz to generate links from authoritative websites in your industry so you can stay atop Google’s search results.
Has anyone invented a time machine that would at minimum go back to 2008? If so, shoot me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
Hodor – Game of Thrones
“Hodor, Hodor, Hodor, Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor, Hodor… Hodor…. Hodor…. Hodor Hodor, Hodor… Hodor Hodor Hodor… Hodor, Hodor, Hodor, Hodor, Hodor… Hodor.
Hodor Hodor Hodor, Hodor.. Hodor, Hodor, Hodor.. Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor
Hodor Hodor Hodor Hodor, Hodor, Hodor, Hodor… Hodor… Hodor.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: Alright, Hodor, thanks for the valuable link building advice. It’s probably some of the best advice anyone can ever get on building links to their website!
Forrest Gump – Forrest Gump
“Link building is like a box of chocolates.
You never know who will read your link building guest post outreach emails and you never know who will link to your content or what you will get.
Also, be sure to check the domain authority and trust flow of the domain you are seeking to receive a link from.
Mama always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.”
Wendy – Wendy’s
“Oh really? C’mon, what the hell you a**hole. I am the only woman on this list, and you put me last behind Hodor and Forrest Gump? And I’m just a damn cartoon logo? WTF?
I know about link building. I am an expert at creating opportunities to encourage food bloggers to link to our brand. But I am so annoyed that you put a woman last. But I will admit, using square burger patties has helped generate social media buzz and encouraged people to link to us for being different in the fast food industry.
Dammit, what the hell. How did you get that out of me? Where the hell is Dave Thomas?”
EDITOR’S NOTE: Wendy’s is last in alphabetical order on this list, and the others are mixed in alphabetical order, so that’s why Wendy’s is last. ‘W’ just seemed like a good fit to go last. Not because she is a woman.
And I didn’t quite get to 87 experts in this link building post… yet. I am still waiting for responses from the others.
